1. Place important documents in a waterproof bag.
Make sure to place all copies of personal documents such as medication lists & information, proof of your address, deed or lease to your home, birth certificates, and any other important documents in a way waterproof bag. You should also include your cell phone, chargers, family emergency contact information, and extra cash within the bag as well.
2. Pack a bag containing the following.
Pack a bag containing flashlights, extra batteries, first aid kit, extra medications, battery powered radio, sanitary and hygiene products, and a multi-purpose tool.
3. Check you have enough food/water items.
It is important to ensure that you have enough non-perishable food supply for at least 3 days. It is also important to ensure that you have an adequate amount of water supply as well. It is recommended to have a gallon of water, one per person, per day, for at least 3 days.
4. Prepare an extra bag.
Be sure to pack an extra bag containing an emergency blanket, map of the area, baby supplies, pet essentials, clothing, sturdy shoes, and tools to secure your home.
5. Most Importantly.
In addition to all the things mentioned above, you should most importantly be sure that you are in a safe, and secure shelter that is not an inundation zone. NOAA provides user friendly storm surge interactive maps to help you keep track of your location and where you should go when a hurricane is approaching.
